If you haven’t heard, May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. And that’s a really good thing. It’s meant to raise awareness and remind folks to keep an eye out for all of us two-wheeled freaks. For most riders, though, every month is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. That’s because out there in the land of runaway SUV’s and texting teenagers, you can’t afford to take any time off from protecting yourself.
Hence our apprehension when testing Speed & Strength’s Twist of Fate Race Glove. Trust in your protective gear is key, and while we’d heard good stuff about Speed & Strength, we hadn’t yet tested any in the heat of riding battle. Thankfully, our anxiety was unwarranted. Now that we’ve given these gloves a proper shakedown, we’re pretty big fans.
The Twist of Fate Race Gloves are Speed & Strength’s mack daddy, top of the line glove offering, but at well under $200, they come in at a much lower price point than many other high-end race gloves. So what do you get for your money? Quite a bit, actually. The Twist of Fate Race Gloves feature Cowhide frames with Kangaroo leather palms, a must-have for any top-flight race glove. Kangaroo leather is much stronger than regular cow leather, and can therefore be thinner in areas where feel is important (like the palm of a glove).
Moving on, the Twist of Fate’s also feature Kevlar reinforcements in key abrasion areas, as well as sturdy Thermoplastic knuckle, finger and vented wrist protection.
Hinged knuckles and a dual-stage hook-and-loop cuff closure complete the package. Overall you get the feeling that these gloves will definitely do their job if you ever need them.
Our test runs proved that the Twist of Fate’s were comfortable right from the get-go, with no break-in time needed at all. The super strong Kangaroo palms did their job, providing excellent grip feel, while the hinged knuckles allowed for easy finger articulation with no pulling or rubbing.
The fit and finish of these Speed & Strength gloves seems to be of a very high level, with no fading or dye transfer from sweat, and a general sturdiness even after hardcore track testing in the early summer heat.
The two-step wrist closure takes a bit of getting used to, but once strapped on, everything is snug and there is very little bulk or excess material (a big complaint we’ve had with some race gloves we’ve sampled).
All in all, we were really impressed by these gloves. Their combination of feature content and relative value make them a solid choice for any sport rider’s gear bag. Speed & Strength is a growing name in the race & street apparel biz, and if the Twist of Fate Gloves are any indication, they are definitely headed in the right direction. Check ‘em out and see if you agree.
