kawasaki mule

Most people are unaware that Mule is an acronym Kawasaki used to describe the four wheeled, side x side ATV they released in the late 80's. While most just considered it to represent the fact you could use the truck styled ATV like a mule, M.U.L.E. actually stands for: Multi-Use Light Equipment. Although UTV's have become extremely popular with recreational riders, the Kawasaki Mule had a very humble beginning. In the early 80's Ranchers, Farmers, Fire Departments, and Construction Site Workers were all enjoying the benefits of all the new ATV's being introduced to the market. The new go-anywhere vehicles made it possible to cover more ground and the racks allowed you to pack around some tools to get work done more efficiently. This was a huge step up from a wheel barrow but the masses demanded more cargo room and the ability to transport more than one passenger.

Born from newly discovered necessity, the Mule allowed you to transport two passengers and had a cargo box for material, livestock feed, tools, or whatever it took to complete the job. The original 1988 Kawasaki Mule 1000 is considered by most to be the first Side x Side UTV. Complete with a 454cc liquid cooled twin cylinder engine, roll cage, independent front and rear suspension, and differential lock the first Mule was a huge success and set the bar for all the UTV's that followed.

In 1989, Kawasaki made a few revisions to the Mule to make it a bit more capable and user friendly. Full time four wheel drive makes a vehicle hard to steer on dry, high traction surfaces, so in 1989 Kawasaki installed selectable 2WD or 4WD to make the Mule easier to steer. Kawasaki also added selectable Hi/Lo gearing on the transmission to increase the towing power without limiting the top speed.

Another Kawasaki acronym for the Mule family is the TM or the (Tenderfoot Mule) also call the turf model. This Mule was designed for applications like golf courses, universities, theme parks, and other areas where work had to be done without destroying the grounds surface. The 2020 was the first of the TM models and came equipped with a fan cooled single cylinder engine and a dual-mode differential that the operator could lock or unlock depending on traction needs.

The Kawasaki Mule 2030 was another variation of the 2WD Mule line designed for industrial applications. The 2030 had hard surface tires, a flatbed cargo area, and special fuel and electrical systems designed specifically for industrial areas typically found in manufacturing facilities and warehouses.

The Mid-size Mules were very popular with many workers across the nation but posed a few problems for the average Joe. For starters the Mule would not fit in a pickup making it necessary to purchase a hauling trailer anytime you wanted to take it anywhere. Also the Mule was about the size of a small truck so storing it was much more difficult than for the typical ATV. To solve these problems, Kawasaki introduced the Mule 500 with seating for only one passenger, and designed it specifically to fit into the back of a full-size pick up making transportation much easier.

In 1993 Kawasaki introduced the Mule 2510 for those not restricted by storage and transportation limits. The new Mule 2510 was the top-of-the-line UTV complete with a new 617 cc Liquid cooled V-twin engine, Tilting Cargo Box, and Fan-Cooled Belt Drive Converter.

In 1997 Kawasaki introduced the Mule 550 based on the original 500 series. The 550 was still compact enough to fin into the bed of a standard pickup but added seating for 2 passengers.

By 2000 customers were demanding more power and better fuel economy as other manufactures started introducing their own Side x Sides to the rapidly expanding market. Kawasaki answered those demands with a 950 cc three cylinder diesel Mule 2510.  The Mule 2510 offered great fuel economy while providing increased towing capacity and stump pulling torque. With most job site having large machinery powered by Diesel engines, the Kawasaki Mule 2510 Diesel was an obvious choice. The diesel was also a great choice for agricultural and underground mining operations because diesel fuel is readily available and there's no need to keep additional fuel types for the smaller transport vehicles.

In 2001 Kawasaki introduced the popular 3000 series that had a truck like look and the very popular 620 series engine. The new mule was one of the hardest working and most dependable UTV's built to date. Kawasaki had 3 versions, the 3010 4wd model, 3020 Turf model and the standard 2wd 3000 model. With the success of the 3000 series of Mules Kawasaki added the Diesel engine with upgraded stronger CVT belt drive as an option for the 3010 in 2003.

For 2005 Kawasaki gave the compact series a long overdue face lift by introducing the Mule 600 series. The new compact 610 model was powered by a new 401 cc single engine, 24" tires and still fit into the bed a pickup making transport easier for the average Joe.

2005 also saw the introduction of the first Mule Trans model. The "Trans" or "Transformer" was a new concept that Kawasaki designed for customer who wanted the ability to haul additional passenger from time to time but didn't want to permanently sacrifice any valuable cargo space. The Mule Trans models have passenger seats the easily fold out of the way when not in use so you can use the entire cargo area.

With the additional weight from the Trans platform the mule was a bit harder to steer. In 2008 Kawasaki added Electronic Power Steering to the Diesel Trans to help the driver safely steer at any speed. The Power steering is aided by the Mule's ECU which adjusts the power steering assistance based on the vehicle speed making steering easy with plenty of feedback at all speeds.

In 2009 Kawasaki offered power steering on all the four wheel drive models including the new 4000 series. With powerful fuel injected gas engines and time tested Kawasaki Mule drive trains, the 4000 series Mules carried on the Mule's long standing legacy of dependability, and capability.

With the growing popularity of recreational UTV riding, Kawasaki decided to upgrade the 610 Mule to make it more capable on the trails. By adding 26" tires on 12" wheels the mule 610 XC was born. With the added ground clearance the XC could fit on most ATV trails and negotiate tougher obstacles.

The Kawasaki Mule has seen many transformations since it's introduction in 1988. Their continued improvment to the dependable Mule platform makes it exciting to think about what Kawasaki will do next.

With all the models available there's no job to big or to small for the family of Kawasaki Mules.
